Benefits of Exercise on Blood Pressure: Long-term Health Effects High blood pressure is a major health problem in the United States, with more than 50 million people that have fallen under the stimulations of this disease. Exercise has been one of the most recommended strategies in successfully reducing blood pressure. Weight loss, which accompanies exercise, is also recommended to reduce the risk of hypertension as well as to cure it. Exercise alone can reduce systolic blood pressure by 3.5 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 2 mmHg. By eating healthy and not exercising you can reduce systolic blood pressure by 8.5 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 6.5 mmHg for every 8 kg you lose. For those that do a combined intervention of exercise and weight-loss, they have been recorded to reduce systolic blood pressure by as much as 12.5 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by as much as 7.5 mmHg (Bacon et al, 2004). These reductions have been attributed to improvements in the left ventricular structure and function as well as improved peripheral vascular health that accompany exercise.
